How do I setup an OSAAP Light Tower Camera?

OSAAP's Light Tower Camera- Quick Setup Guide

1. Install Camera Software

  • Make sure that both the Camera and the Light Panel are powered on
  • Connect the Camera to the PC using a USB Cable
  • Check if the Cannon EOS software has been installed, if not, download it from the Canon Web Site 
    -For Canon EOS Rebel T7i -> Canon EOS Rebel T7i Site
  • Select Software & Drivers
  • Scroll down to the EOS Utility 3.18.40 for Windows (or latest version)
  • Download and Install
  • Once Installed, open Canon EOS Utility 3 Software
    *Note there is a Wi-Fi LAN version that does not work with this camera setup*
    *Note the EOS Webcam Utility does not work with this camera setup*

2. Camera Setup

  • Place the camera in Manual Mode (M)

  • Set the Zoom to around 35mm

    *Note the camera will need to be about 4.5 feet above the light panel*

  • Connect to the Camera using the Canon EOS Utility Software

  • Select the Remote Shooting option

  • Select the folder to where the photos will be saved

  • Make sure the following settings have been applied:

    -Auto White Balance (AWB) is on

    -ISO=100

  • Open Live View

  • Verify the Camera is centered over the Light Panel and the frame of the Light Panel is visible

    -Adjust the zoom as needed to capture as much of the Light Panel as possible 

  • Place one or more tools on the Light Panel

    -Make sure the Light Panel is clean from debris & scratches

    -Place taller parts in the center of the Light Panel

    -For larger parts, it is best to take a photo of one tool at a time

    -For shiny and translucent parts, please order our Matte Tool Spray from OSAAP®

  • Take a photo, you will hear the Camera's shutter open/close

  • Test the photo with OSAAP® BlueShadow CAD Software by opening it with the Image Scan feature

3. Troubleshooting

3.1 Cannot Connect to Camera

  • Only one instance of the Canon EOS Utility can be running
    -If you have a PC with multiple user logins, each user account must ensure the Canon EOS Software is not running
    -Make sure no other software is trying to communicate with the Camera
  • Make sure Microsoft Windows is up-to-date and there are no pending updates to download or install
  • Ensure you are using the latest version of the Canon EOS Utility Software
    *Note that version 3 does not work with the older Canon EOS Rebel T5 cameras. You will need to upgrade to a newer camera version*
  • Make sure the camera is set to "M" mode

3.2 Received an error that Camera cannot focus

  • Switch to Manual Focus in the Canon EOS Utility Software and set the zoom to around 35mm

3.3 Light Panel Image looks darker than normal

  • Make sure the ISO is set to 100
  • Make sure AWB (Auto White Balance) is set to Auto

3.4 Canon EOS Rebel T5 is not working

  • This only works on Windows 10, it is not supported on Windows 11
  • This does not work on the new v3 EOS Utility software, you must download and use the v2 software (EOS Utility 2.14.20a is listed under Windows 10 (x64)
